DEPED ORIENTED ON FIRE-EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE

INCESSANT in the Information Education Campaign (IEC) to intensify readiness and applicable reaction to disasters particularly in schools, an orientation on fire-earthquake hazards preparedness and response for supervisors, school heads, principals and head teachers of the Department of Education’s (DepEd) 1st Congressional District was conjointly facilitated by the Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Management and the Bureau Of Fire Protection Offices (SPDRMO/BFP) at the division office today, supervised by Engineer Raden D. Dimaano and Chief Inspector Achilles M. Santiago respectively, which further enhanced the continuing sequence of National Disaster Consciousness Month activities as July rolls along this year.

The succeeding batch of participants (2nd Congressional District) will proceed on Wednesday (July 25) for the same orientation package.

Earlier, Engr. Dimaano stated that the recent activity would complement the fire and earthquake drill which was initially organized for Gubat National High School past June 29, 2012 by the SPDRMO, BFP and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s (PDRRMC) Search and Rescue Office.

Similarly, the current undertaking corresponded to a three-day orientation on emergency, preparedness and response for Provincial Government employees last July 10th, 11th and 12th at the Training Hall of the Governor’s Office.

In her statement, Dr. Salvacion E. Espedido (OIC-Schools Division Superintendent) went over a memorandum previously sent off to DepEd by the PDRRMC which elucidates the purpose of the on-going orientation. Related activities have been conducted for a number of selected schools but, the Council deemed it necessary and essential to involve all school divisions because this would guarantee the school frontrunners’ reverberation of what they have learned to the teachers as well as the students, the memo said.

“We all know that fire and earthquake drills, along with other trainings on disaster have been conducted in the past for schools so, most of us are already familiar with this exercise,” Dr. Espedido assumed.

“Nevertheless, we need more familiarity because disasters seem irrepressible these days and in fact have turned into a global concern,” she added.

The most significant part of the training Espedido concluded is the ability the participants would develop so as to resonate what they have learned upon returning to their respective schools. She expressed thanks the PDRRMC Chairman, Honorable Governor Raul R. Lee for the opportunity given to all the teachers in terms of preparedness to disasters. (Von Andre E.
